Here's what we've been doing...
Eli's First Birthday
The Birthday Boy
Uncle Ryan flew in from San Francisco
Eli loves to play with cars
But, he doesn't care for cake
The Gentry Safari
Alissa and I took all six of our kids to the safari one Friday (unaware that it was an official field trip day for all the local schools). The kids loved it and we had a great time! (I would like to see the daddy's attempt something like that)
Will and Caleb (the sweet ones)
Kate and Eli (the ones with attitudes)
Easy going Eli just taking it all in
They loved petting the baby animals. Will's favorite was the snake. Kate loved the bunnies. Eli loved this calf.
The highlight of their trip, however, was chasing these chickens. They ran around for at least 30 minutes (good way to wear them out!).
Devil's Den
We celebrated the Kilpatrick's departure with one last family outing to Devils Den. We hiked around, explored the caves and finished the evening with pheasant fajitas...thats right, I tried pheasant for the first time and it was really good (tastes like chicken). Well done, Jordan!
My cavemen
Jordan and all the little troopers
Water wars
Throwing rocks in the river...always a hit with kids.
Mommy and Eli survived the hike!
Canoing on the Elk River
For Memorial Day, we took the kids canoing. They had never been before, and they loved it. Just the right amount of swimming, fishing and boating. The water was high from all the rain so there were even a few little rapids which thrilled the kids...and Daddy.
The family (Eli stayed with Grandma and PePa...not quite ready for the rapids!)
Kate loves the water
Will is our little fisherman
They liked to ride in the very front of the canoe with me...they kept getting frustrated with me for hitting them in the head with my paddle.
Me and my sister-in-law Kristin. We had a great weekend together!
Lazy Days at Home...we have enjoyed having time to take it easy.
Playing out back on their John Deere
Will is Daddy's official helper. He has become pretty handy when it comes to yard work.
Kate dancing in the puddles while helping Daddy wash GRANDMA'S bike. :)
All the little helpers...we are so blessed!

A Promise of Things to Come
I apologize for my absence from the blogging network over the last couple of months. The weeks have flown by and we have been taken with them. Since I last posted, we celebrated Eli's first birthday. Its hard to believe he is already one. My tiny 6lb. 12oz. baby is now a 20lb. 4 oz. little boy. Although his looks and weight have changed, he is still the most content, happy bundle of joy a mom could ask for. His smile continually brightens my day. To celebrate we had a small, family party for him which was extra special since Uncle Ryan and Aunt Chi-Chi were able to fly in from "the bridge" (Golden Gate) and attend. Eli had lots of fun being the center of attention at the party, but strongly disliked the cake. Much like his older brother, he did not appreciate having his fingers and face covered in icing...i thought boys liked making messes; maybe that comes with age!
On a different note, we have also had to say goodbye to our closest friends. Over the last year and a half, we have greatly enjoyed having Steven and Brooke live so close. Always in the past, they have lived a good distance away, and we were only able to see them once, maybe twice, a year. Needless to say, we have been spoiled having them in Fayetteville. Every week we spent countless hours talking, playing with the kids, eating out, watching movies and enjoying our moments together. The kids always looked forward to the next time they got to see them. Brooke and Steven poured a lot of time and love on our kids, and the kids love them. This last Sunday, the Johnson's packed up and began their journey back to Charleston, South Carolina. They always enjoyed living there and just felt it was a good fit for their family. For us it is bittersweet; we are happy for them, but we will greatly miss their company. The kids are already asking when we can go to the beach and see them and the doggies again. Please pray for them as they begin moving in to their new house and start new jobs. They have already faced many setbacks and frustrations, but nothing that cannot be overcome. We look forward to going out their to visit. We loved the Charleston area, its history, beauty and southern charm...who knows, maybe one day we'll end up there ourselves!
I promise to post some pictures of of Eli's party and the kids soon. Its feels good to be back!

Babies and Battles
I thought I would post some pictures of the kids. Eli is becoming a big boy. He just turned 10 months this week and is starting to take his first steps.
Every night, the kids get out Will's castle and GIJoes to play "Army" (Will used to call them "mans," but Nate thought that was a little weird so he changed it to "Army"). Even Eli gets in on the action. Kate starts out with the boys but quickly moves to her dollhouse where she pretends her "gurls" are going to a ball. Its fun to listen to her dolls talk back and forth, apparently Cinderella and Tinkerbell are best friends and the have to save Dora from the poople dragon...its cute.

A New Day
We have had yet another week of illness and mishaps. We just can't seem to get our immune systems in gear this year. I once took pride in being one of those calm, cool, collected moms who doesn't take the kids to the doctor at the first sign of a sniffle, but I must say we have been literally throwing money at the pediatric clinic this month.
It all started with Eli's poor ears. For over eight weeks he has had ear infections. My sweet little boy probably can't remember what its like to hear clearly. We have been through four sick doctors visits, four antibiotics, 3 aweful diaper rashes, 2 bottles of ear numbing drops and 2 "recheck" visits. I have to admit I am a pro at administering drug dosages now. I have it down to an art, once a day, twice a day, three times daily, every 4-6 hours with a small amount of food... The problem with ear infections is that you can never be sure. He's pulling at his ear: is it an infection, is he tired, is it a quirky habit he's had since the womb? At one of the recheck appointments the doctor insisted we make, I actually waited over an hour and a half for the nurse practitioner to come in look in his ears and say, "All clear!" Don't get me wrong, I was excited to get the good news, but how expensive can an otoscope really be. Surely I could look in Eli's ears and compare it to examples on the internet. I have seriously contemplated the idea. It would most likely be cheaper in the long run...less accurate perhaps.
For the time being Eli's ears are "All clear!" But, like I said before, that was just the beginning. Being healthy was just too boring for the Brown's; we needed a little more excitement than that.
On Sunday, Nate's parents offered to keep the kids so Nate and I could go out for Valentine's day. We dropped them off and proceeded to dinner and an early movie. We got back around nine and walked in the door to the smell of soured milk and Lysol. Apparently, Eli had been throwing up from the time we left until 30 minutes before we got back. I felt awful for them; they looked exhausted. He must have gotten it out of his system at their house because he didn't get sick once after we got back. I stayed home with him Monday just to be sure and went to work Tuesday like normal...until it hit me. While sitting at lunch with a customer in Fort Smith, I started to feel lightheaded and woozy. When I got home that evening, I became quite intimate with our porcelain throne(luckly it had been cleaned recently-often a hit or a miss chore at our house!). I stayed home Wednesday to catch up on the sleep I had missed the night before and got a call from my mom around noon saying Will was laying lethargic on the couch complaining that his tummy hurt really bad--note: he had been complaining off and on about his tummy for the last two weeks. Nate picked him up and brought him home. He looked so pathetic. He wouldn't eat or drink. He just kept saying, "I'm sorry my tummy hurts. I'm sorry I don't feel better." (Will is my sensitive and sweet child, especially when he is sick.)I called the doctor and an hour later the nurse called to say we should bring him in. As it turns out, Will has not been using the restroom. Ever since he had the 24 hour bug, his body has been trying to retain fluids and has made him severely constipated. I felt like a terrible mom. I didn't have a clue that he had not been going #2. He's such a big boy now and he takes care of everything on his own (which is wonderful by the way!). The doctor gave us some dietary ways to help him and prescribed a special laxative for him to take three times daily, of course.
By the time we left the doctor's office, it was time to pick up Kate and Eli. I walked up to mom's house and could hear crying...better yet, screaming coming from inside. Kate's eye was watery and swollen. Her "gurls" (aka Barbies) had poked her in the eye while she was playing. Mom said she had been sporadically screaming since it had happened. That night Will cryed at various times about his tummy hurting, Kate screamed because she scratched her eye, Eli whined and whimpered because his teeth hurt (he's finally getting his first two teeth!) and Mommy and Daddy prayed to make it until 730...BEDTIME! I honestly felt like we were falling apart.
On weeks like this, I am reminded that the beauty of life in Christ is that each day can be new, clean, unwritten and untainted. Regardless of all the chaos the day, week or month before, a new day can bring a refreshed spirit, new health and a new hope that what was previously broken can be mended, what was sick can be healed, what was lost can be found and what was out of reach can be obtained. We are truly blessed.

Getting Started
Our first post has been long overdue, however, life around the Brown household has been non-stop chaos the last few weeks. I began the new year with an all encompassing resolution which I hoped would trickle down into every crevasse of our lives...REDUCE STRESS. With a preschooler, a toddler, a baby, a spouse, and a job, life can be overwhelming at times. Being the perfectionist, micro-manager that I am, I tend to only make things worse and on top of that, I can't say no (please don't use this against me in the future). Reducing unnecessary stress has been my desire for the last few weeks, although I'm not so sure I've done a very good job.
Week 1: Family is in town...participated in every family function known to mankind, every night of the week, all the while trying to conquer the mounds of laundry stockpiling in my bedroom and growing ever closer to the approaching cruise deadline for which I needed to pack. All this to say I had many sleep deprived nights that week. (We really did enjoy seeing my brother Ryan and his wife Rachel-lots of good times with them!)
Week 2: Cruise...very relaxed, very refreshed, very spoiled. We stayed five days and five nights on the Carnival Cruise ship Ecstasy. We left out of Galveston, TX and ported in Progreso & Cozumel, Mexico with two days at sea. Cozumel was beautiful and everything aboard the ship was wonderful. We had a great time. In fact, I think I'll begin every year with a Caribbean cruise. You may think I'm kidding, but I'm definitely looking into it.
Week 3: Back to reality...I really drug my feet getting back into a routine. No housekeeping service to make my bed and wash my towels, no room service to bring me a drink when I got thirsty, no gourmet chef to cook a five-course meal for me at night, no nightly entertainment to amuse me. I have to say, it was a little rough that first week back. Changing diapers and cooking macaroni isn't quite as glamorous (although much more meaningful in the long run). Laundry, dirty dishes and dirty children ruled the house once again as I continued to put off the inevitable.
Week 4: Wrecks...Lets just say we were rear-ended twice in one week in two different cars. Will asked us, "Is this why we wear our seat belts?" At least he gleaned something valuable from the accidents; that's a praise.
Week 5: Quarantine...all three of the kids have been on a vomiting spree. Will started in the morning, Kate in the afternoon and Eli in the evening. I spent three days holding kids over the toilet (not Baby Eli, of course), cleaning sheets, cleaning clothes, cleaning floors and making jello. Then the lovely little "bug" moved to the south, leading to more soiled clothes, sheets and toilet time. I don't think I stepped foot outside for four straight days. On a positive note, I finally caught up on the neglected housework from the weeks before!
And now here we are, the last few days have been uneventful for which I am very thankful. In spite of all the madness, I am constantly reminded of the blessings which surround me. Maybe February will be a little less crazy...who am I kidding!
